Zoos Victoria’s vision is to transform the Coranderrk into a dynamic and interactive Indigenous cultural ecotourism experience for visitors to the region.
To achieve this vision for the Coranderrk reserve, Zoos Victoria intends to undertake a strategic restoration plan that will reinvigorate the bushland, and return it to a state reminiscent of 150 years ago.
The land is home to around 10% of Victoria’s plant species and 264 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, frogs and fish. Government authorities have long recognised the botanical and zoological significance of the Coranderrk.
Restoration activities will include the establishment of a feral animal free zone from which foxes, cats, rabbits, and deer have been eradicated; and the reintroduction of the suite of medium sized mammals (formerly part of the Coranderrk ecosystem).
The 2009 Victorian bushfires devastated much of the Yarra Valley and surrounding regions. As a result, the significance of the Coranderrk has been elevated. Zoos Victoria is committed to the protection and development of this site.
As part of the Coranderrk redevelopment, Healesville Sanctuary is hosting eco-tours to the general public, connecting visitors with Australia’s native flora and fauna. For more information about the eco-tours please click here.
We aim to raise $2.2 million to develop the Coranderrk bushland over the next five years.
