This handbook addresses Enduring Understandings in Chapter 4.

Protecting ecosystems depends upon humans limiting their impact.
Since Australian ecosystems evolved in isolation over millions of years, unique plants and animals, which are highly adapted to survive their local conditions, resulted.

Unfortunately in the last 200 years:

  • changes to the landscape and native habitat;
  • the unsustainable use of plants and animals;
  • the introduction of non-endemic species;
  • changes to climate, pollution, disease and direct human conflict
    have all threatened the delicate connections within the ecosystem.
  • Some species have become extinct, many more are threatened.
