Much of the waste at Melbourne Zoo is recycled. We recycle ink cartridges, chemicals, fluorescent tubes, motor oils, asphalt, window glass, metals, timber, concrete, batteries, soil and rocks, glass, cans, paper and cardboard.

Organic Waste

Our green waste is collected from the animals. It includes manure from giraffes, elephants and kangaroos and the bedding material from gorillas, orang-utans and other primates. This material is combined with waste generated from our gardens and plant nursery and food preparation from our caterers. This material is composted and is available commercially as a product called Zoo Gro and Zoo Doo. Zoo Gro is sold in all good nurseries and garden centres. Zoo Doo is sold at selected nurseries and hardware stores.

Public Place Recycling

We have implemented best practice public place recycling to reduce our waste to landfill and increase recycling rates of comingled waste. Funding for the development of this signage was provided by Sustainability victoria.
