Werribee Open Range Zoo springs into action to help save frogs

Melbourne's amphibian enthusiasts leapt into action at Werribee Open Range Zoo on Sunday.

An army of frog finders attended Melbourne Water's annual frog census launch which was held at the Zoo.

Volunteers are asked to record frog calls in their local areas with digital recorders, so that Melbourne Water can map the distribution of frog species and also guage the health of rivers, creeks and wetlands.

To date more than 3400 frog recordings have been submitted since the frog census launch began nine years ago.

Climate change is taking its toll on frogs with less rain flowing into streams and wetland areas. But it's hoped the higher than average September rainfalls will see more frogs in action.

So far, 14 of 16 species in the Melbourne Water region have been recorded.
