New Vet Hospital for Werribee

Wild Dog

Underpinning everything that Zoos Victoria does is the exceptional care we take of the animals in our charge. A new state-of-the-art veterinary hospital will be built at Werribee Open Range Zoo to ensure world class care of our animals. With a budget of approximately $2.1m, this new hospital will be a vast improvement on the current out-dated facility.

The new hospital is critical to the future plans for Werribee Open Range Zoo. We are planning to expand the collection of African wildlife at our ‘jewel of the west' property.
A collection of smaller animals will be joining the zoo and the hospital will be a critical aspect of providing optimal care for these new arrivals.

Zoos Victoria plans to increase the native threatened species breeding programs that are currently managed at Healesville Sanctuary. With space at a premium at the Sanctuary, Werribee Open Range Zoo will expand upon several programs including the Tasmanian Devil and the Eastern-barred Bandicoot.

The space that can be allocated at Werribee for threatened species programs will ensure even greater success for the initiatives, as it will facilitate a substantial pre-release site. This will enable captive-bred animals to acclimatize to the natural environment before being released back to the wild. Following the devastation of the Victorian Bushfires, our threatened species breeding programs are of even greater importance. However these important wildlife conservation programs are not able to progress until the veterinary hospital at Werribee is built.

The new veterinary facility will be built with features that will contribute to Zoos Victoria's goal of being carbon neutral by 2012. The building design will incorporate sustainability features, minimising energy use and the operational impact on the environment.

The Zoos Victoria Foundation would like to invite you to be a part of this ground-breaking development for Werribee Open Range Zoo.
